About RR

It all started when…

The QWRC took part in a Pilot Program in the early 2000’s for a relationship violence prevention program through a (then formed) group on Salt Spring Island called SWOVA - Salt Spring Women Opposing Violence and Abuse. The pilot went well and the group had the statistics needed to move their program forward.

In 2014 the QWRC was looking for a Prevention Program for youth. The program had to be award-winning, evidence-based, and critically acclaimed. With the support of the province, the SD28 and the admin of the schools, the RR program was borne in Quesnel.

Debbie Scallion was hired as the Coordinator/facilitator and a team of facilitators was created.

In 2018, SWOVA no longer held the program as their own and the QWRC was free to alter it in as many ways as needed to make it truly our own. The program is constantly being evaluated and updated by Debbie and Angie Bagri to ensure the material is the most relevant to the current moment, and that the delivery is engaging and fun… even though the topics are serious.

Topics include:

  • Stress

  • Anger

  • Communication Skills

  • Emotional Literacy

  • Boundaries

  • Healthy relationships

  • Cycle of Relationship violence

  • Power in relationships

  • Equity

  • Consent

  • Sexual Harassment

  • Systemic Violence

We cover these topics while doing our very best to create a safe supportive environment, where youth can have their voices heard. Each session covers one topic by two co-facilitators where they skillfully weave in some personal stories, along with activities that get the class moving, sharing and learning.

What some teachers have been saying:

“The respectful relationship workshops were a great addition to our Career Life Education class at Correlieu Secondary. Establishing a common understanding of what respectful relationships should look like within our classroom, our school, and our community helped unite our students.

Debbie does an amazing job of creating a safe place for participants to share and discuss openly. As an educator, I would highly recommend the respectful relationship workshops for teams or groups looking to grow, understand and develop successful relationships.

The respectful relationship workshops were thoroughly enjoyed by my class. At the end of the school year, students told me that it was one of their favourite parts of our course as they got to learn more about each other and how we as a group have similar hopes for what respectful relationships look like in our community.”
