QWRC GOALS

• To provide women with access to resources, counseling and self-help programs that will assist them with life choices.

• To actively address all forms of violence against women at all levels of the community.

• To work towards the elimination of poverty.

• To challenge sexism and all forms of discrimination against women including racism, homo/bi/transphobia, at all levels of the community and help women achieve their rightful place in society.

• To enhance the status of women by addressing issues of importance to women such as access to high-quality, universally accessible childcare, and the right to equal pay for work of equal value.

a woman is killed by her intimate partner in Canada

It costs lives: approximately every six days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner (Amelia Armstrong and Brianna Jaffray, Statistics Canada, 2021).

• The toll on those who are harmed is significant. It’s hard on those around them, too. Children who witness violence in the home have twice the rate of psychiatric disorders as children from non-violent homes (Eve Bender, Psychiatric News, 2004).

• It costs billions of dollars: $7.4 billion to deal with the aftermath of spousal violence alone (Department of Justice, 2009).

• Domestic violence can carry over into the workplace, threatening women’s ability to maintain economic independence. More than half (53%) of study respondents who experienced domestic violence said that at least one type of abusive act happened at or near their workplace. Almost 40% of those who had experienced domestic abuse said it made it difficult for them to get to work, and 8.5% said that they lost their jobs because of it (Jennifer C.D. MacGregor et al., Safety and Health at Work, 2016).

Poverty is a global problem and eradicating it is of key importance (United Nations Department of Economic and Global Affairs). It is the single largest determinant of health (World Health Organization). Twelve percent of the population of Canada live in relative income poverty, and 33% would be at risk of falling into poverty if they had to forgo three months of income (OECD, 2020).

women than men have fallen out of the labour force since 2020

Almost half a million Canadian women who lost their jobs during the pandemic hadn’t returned to work as of January. More than 200,000 had slipped into the ranks of the long-term unemployed, a threefold increase over last year.

Before the crisis, these women held a wide variety of jobs, but there was a common thread. Many worked, for modest pay, in the low-skilled service jobs that helped keep the broader Canadian economy humming along. They may have lacked the economic clout of some other Canadian workers, but they were highly visible, in food courts, salons, pubs and elsewhere—places that didn’t allow for safe physical distancing when the pandemic hit. Because women represented the majority in industries most affected by virus-containment measures, they bore the brunt of the job losses.
